Could We Go Back
© 2008 Martha Ann Brooks
Brilliant words dance on my tongue
One glance from you and they’re undone
They slip my mind like smoke rings in flight
Disappear like stars at the end of a long night
Come what may, come what may
Could we go back to a different place
Inhabitants of a former space
Where you didn’t own what you know now
Where you could sleep
Through silence and sound
Not like now, Not like now
Bridge:
The softest sighs hurt my ears
The noise of waves crashin
Is really just my tears
Whispering as they fall
Taking all the dreams
That’s all, that’s all
You asked if I was in command
It felt like I was way back then
But now I realize
I’m here for you, not me
I’m better being here no matter what the rest believe
Something only you and I see, You and I see
You lingered longer than awhile
Even when you didn’t want to stay
You never said a word but I knew
You wanted to quit
You wished to go away, nevermore to handle it
But the two of us nailed your feet to the floor
and locked the door
Bridge:
So you stayed and wore this name
Has it been worth it
To play this kind of game
Are you bluffing or will you stay
Until last call
After all, after all
Could we go back to a different place
Inhabitants of a former space
Where you didn’t own what you know now
Where you could sleep
Through silence and sound
Not like now, Not like now
